The Sydney Harbour Bridge
Can you climb to the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge?
Click on the picture for additional pictures.

Yes, and it is definitely worth doing! Due to the height that you will be walking, however, all loose articles must be removed (lockers are provided) - even cameras cannot be taken. (You can purchase souvenir photographs at the end of your tour.) In addition, you will also be tested for alcohol, by a breathalyser. For those who do not want to climb it, there is a great Pylon Lookout and Museum in the Pylon closest to The Rocks.

The bridge is the largest steel arch bridge in the world. It is 440 feet high at its highest point. (The climb is NOT for the acrophobic!)

In 1932, Francis De Groot, a retired cavalry officer, managed to get himself selected as part of the honour guard at the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. When the ribbon was about to be cut, he galloped forward on his horse and slashed the ribbon with his sword, declaring the bridge open in the name of "the decent citizens of New South Wales."

Tomorrow's picture: What is the big deal about Mrs. Macquarie's chair?
